Who would want to spend all summer memorizing Bible verses?! Who has time? Isn’t summer for playing, and enjoying life? Isn’t Bible Bee is just for those “brainy” types who enjoy having their head stuck in a book all day anyway?
We all know we “should” memorize, like a long list of other “shoulds” in our life. But really, why should we bother, when we can look up a verse any time we want to on our clever little techno gadgets? Besides, all things in moderation – you can’t possibly expect my kids to memorize hundreds of verses! Let’s talk reality here.
If this is what you are thinking about the National Bible Bee – you are not alone! But – and this is BIG – if you subscribe to those thoughts, you are missing out on such amazing blessings. Yes, it is hard work. Yes, it requires sacrifice. Yes, it requires a change in thinking about what is important in this life. Is it worth it? Really?
Those 300 children who qualified for the National Competition last year were not the “elite” of this world in terms of social status, intelligence, wealth, talent, background, or anything this world considers important. They and their families simply took God’s Word at face value. Hide it in your heart. Post it on your door frames. Talk about it coming and going. Meditate on it. Live by it. As one of those families, I can say unequivocally, YES, IT IS SO WORTH IT!
Understand this: the National Bible Bee itself is unimportant. It was not here a few years ago, and may not be here a few years from now. God’s Word is what is important, and the Bible Bee is a tool that has been used to make that a reality in my life. A reality in my kids’ lives. A tool to motivate us to do what we ought to be doing!
The best schools, the best clubs, the best vacations, the best sports programs … they are the best this world has to offer – but they will not instill God’s Word in the hearts of your children. Consider Bible Bee this year for your family.
